Thetford Railway Station & Train Services

Thetford railway station is located on Station Road a short walk north-west from the town centre. Regular train services run between Norwich and Ely, and then on to either Cambridge or Nottingham and beyond.

Trains from two different operating companies serve Thetford Station. Greater Anglia runs a roughly hourly service between Norwich and Cambridge, with the trains calling at most of the stations along the way, including Brandon, Attleborough and Wymondham. East Midlands Railway runs a roughly hourly service between Norwich and Liverpool Lime Street, via Ely, Manchester and Nottingham. Between Norwich and Ely, these trains only stop at Thetford.

The station itself is owned by Network Rail, but its maintenance and day-to-day management is undertaken by the train operator Abelio Greater Anglia as part of their franchise contract. The station has covered waiting areas on both platforms. There are toilets, a ticket office and a waiting room, but the opening hours are limited. There is a small car park (charges apply) on the south side of the station, and bicycle parkign is available on both platforms.

There are a number of issues at the Station, including a shortage of car parking, the lack of step-free access between the platforms without a long detour, and poor ticketing provision. See the Railway Station Improvements page for details of efforts to address these problems.
