Thetford Library & Museums

Thetford is home to a county library, three museums, and three significant archaeological sites.

Thetford Library
The library is run by Norfolk County Council. As well as a variety of books, the library has computer games recorded music for loan. It also holds three special local collections devoted to: Duleep Singh, Thomas Paine and Thetford Studies.
Ancient House Museum
The Museum is run by Norfolk County Council. It covers local history, including exhibits relating to Thomas Paine and Duleep Singh.
Charles Burrell Museum
The museum is housed in the paint shop of the former Charles Burrell engineering Works. The museum is a charity (Reg. No. 802250) and is run by volunteers. The collection includes a number of Burrell traction engines and artefacts from the works. Jones' van from the Dad's Army TV series is also on display here.
Dad's Army Museum
The museum celebrates the classic BBC TV comedy series Dad's Army, which was filmed in and around Thetford. It includes displays and memorabilia from the series. The museum is a charity (Reg. No. 1139465) and it is run by volunteers.
Thetford Priory
The ruins of a large Clunic Priory can be found next to Abbey Meadows. The site is owned by English Heritage and is free to visit.
Church of the Holy Sepculchre
The only surviving remains in England of a priory of canons of the Holy Sepulchre. The site is owned by English Heritage and is free to visit.
Castle Hill
The remains of the motte and bailey castle can be found in Castle Park. The site is owned by Thetford Town Council and is freely accessible.
