Thetford Street Lighting

Most of the Street Lights in Thetford are provided and maintained by Norfolk County Council. Some (on footpaths rather than roads) are instead owned by Thetford Town Council. Lighting on the A11 Trunk Road and its roundabouts is the responsibility of Highways England.

The easiest way to report a problem with a street lamp, is to use FixMyStreet. It makes it easier for the owner if you make a note of the number on the column where there is one.

Part-Time Lighting Trial

As part of a trial, Norfolk County Council set most of the street lights on residential roads in Thetford to turn off around midnight. The change was not popular, the the Council decided to abandon its plans for part-time lighting across the rest of the county. However, the altered lights in Thetford were not restored to their original timings, much to the consternation of the local residents.

LED Light Upgrades

Prior to 2020, Norfolk County Council had a rolling programme to upgrade traditional street lights to LED lights. These are brighter, cheaper to run, and cheaper to maintain, although the whiter colour is not to everyone's taste. However, in their budge proposals for 2020, no funding was allocated for further LED upgrades.
