Thetford Loops Cycle Routes

The Thetford Area Action Plan (TAAP) includes ambitious plans for a set of circular cycle routes called the Thetford Loops. Despite these being promised in the Plan, there has been little or no action to date to see them implemented.

An overview of the proposed Thetford Loops is provided in the TAAP, and further detail can be found in two reports commissioned by Breckland Council. TAAP Policy TH12 requires that any significant development on or adjacent to one of the loops must provide that part of the loop as part of the development.

The Thetford Loops: Croxton Loop (orange), Forest Loop (green), Northern Loop (purple), Southern Loop (red), and BTO Loop (blue). Solid lines show sections that are already suitable for cyclists. Long dashes indicate sections that can be used at present, but would benefit from some improvement. Short dashes indicate sections that require more work. Markers indicate required road crossing points.

Missed Opportunities

Despite the requirements of TAAP Policy TH12, this has not been enforced by the planning authorities on several developments. This has resulted in a number of missed opportunities to implement parts of the loops:
